Top 10 things I wish I knew when I started looking for a web development bootcamp
When I started my journey into the world of web development, I was full of eagerness, but there were a few things that, looking back, I wish I had known beforehand. So here are the top 10 learnings that can help you find the perfect web development bootcamp.
1. Intensity and time investment: bootcamps are intense because you get a lot of new knowledge in a short amount of time. Don't worry, it can absolutely be done, but it helps to be aware of the time factor beforehand, to bring enough motivation with you and, for example, to weigh up whether you want to do a full-time or a part-time bootcamp. Both are available at neue fische!
2. The importance of basic knowledge: Some prior knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript can help in getting started faster. I could have used my time before the bootcamp more effectively to consolidate these basics in advance.
3. Portfolio of certificates: Employers are more interested in what you can do and what you have built than the certificate itself. A strong portfolio is essential.
4. Learning style customisation: Bootcamps have different teaching methods.
So check beforehand what learning methods the bootcamp you have chosen follows. The supposed "best bootcamp for web development" on review platforms etc. is not necessarily the best bootcamp for you personally. So ask yourself beforehand what your learning style is (e.g. remote or face-to-face teaching) and then choose the best bootcamp for you.
5. Community and network: The community around you is crucial for success.
I wouldn't have thought how valuable a strong network and support from the community can be. Learning together is a great bonding experience!
6. Realistic job expectations: It's important to have realistic expectations about your first job after bootcamp. Not everyone ends up in their dream job straight away. But one thing is clear: by taking the step into the digital world of work and successfully completing a web development bootcamp, you are a big step closer to your IT career.
7. The importance of soft skills: Technical skills are important, but so are soft skills such as communication and teamwork. At neue fische, attention is therefore also paid to this, as this is the only way you can perform on the job later on. And the best is saved for last: within 4 weeks, you and your team will realize a digital team piece - the final project, with which you can draw the attention of neue fische's corporate partners (see point 3. Portfolio) and put your soft skills and teamwork skills to the test.
8. Continuous learning: The bootcamp is just the beginning of your journey. Technology is constantly evolving and continuous learning is a must in your job as a web developer.
9. Choosing the right specialism: There are many areas in web development. Specialization can be helpful, so I recommend investing more time in exploring different paths.
10. Financial planning: Bootcamps are an investment. Solid financial planning in advance can reduce stress and allow you to fully focus on learning. Be it with an education voucher from the Federal Employment Agency or a subsidy from your employer. Find out what funding options are available to you.
These learnings would have undoubtedly made my search for the perfect web development bootcamp more efficient and focussed. If you're at the beginning of your journey, I hope these tips will help you make informed decisions and get you started on your digital future with the perfect bootcamp!
